Low Testosterone in Men Under 40 and How To Correct It Naturally

Testosterone production in men naturally declines beginning in the early thirties, but I am seeing men, younger and younger, with low or suboptimal testosterone. And while you may think this is only about a sex drive issue, it can actually be harmful to men’s health for multiple reasons including early heart disease, osteoporosis, depression, and more.

So why is it happening so early?! Declining testosterone can occur in combination of stress, lifestyle factors like sleep, exercise, nutrition, alcohol intake, or sugar intake, as well as toxin exposures, depending on their job…. things we pick up every day environmentally.

The struggle with suboptimal testosterone in young men is that usually ,the symptoms are not necessarily the classic symptoms that we all think of in regards to low testosterone such as low libido.

For many men under 40 years old, the libido is the last to go but what what they often notice is a decline in energy, motivation, declined exercise recovery, fat gain, worsened focus or cognitive performance, and night sweats.

These type of guys get off work and they don’t feel like doing anything except lying around on the couch. They don’t have the energy to go play with the kids or whatever they normally enjoy doing.

There is a lot more that we can do with these young guys besides just say, "Hey, work on your nutrition, work on your lifestyle, and start exercising some more. While lifestyle factors may help some, it often wont resolve the issue to optimal levels as it’s usually a multi-factorial issue.

There are a couple of options besides just going straight to testosterone therapy, and that's really what I wanted to talk to you about today. There's two of them. One of them is called clomiphene aka Clomid.

The other one is called HCG ( human chorionic gonadotropin. Both of these medications are testicular stimulators. You're basically just trying to get the wiring from the brain to the testicles to reboot so that the body functions better naturally. Clinically most patients in a suboptimal testosterone level 400 - 700ng/dl respond well to one or both of these treatment options. While protocols are patient specific, men an expect to be on these treatments at least three to six months.

Generally, it’s best to start with a more aggressive regimen and as levels and symptoms improve, slowly decline the amount or number of days per week you are using one of these medications until you’re stable off. Depending on how things progress and go, sometimes they can maintain healthy levels of testosterone with lifestyle factors or occasionally cycling on and off of HCG or clomiphene for a period of months to years.

Occasionally, young men don’t benefit significantly from these stimulating treatments. In this case, sometimes the best option for the patient is to begin testosterone replacement.

This can be taken safely and effectively for years at therapeutic levels. One of the downsides is that it does suppress natural testosterone production while you’re on injectables. However, you can remain safely on HCG for support.

And most men say the difference they feel with optimal testosterone levels in terms of energy, cognitive performance and focus, exercise recovery, sleep and more is well worth the downside of being on a medication long term.

If you can keep testosterone at an optimal level without replacing testosterone via a cream or injection, that’s always a win-win. So that's really where clomiphene and HCG come in to play beautifully!

If you are watching this and you're feeling low energy like a “couch potato syndrome”, lack of motivation…you're not recovering as well as you used to from exercise… you're carrying a little extra tire on the waist, not sleeping as well, having night sweats. etc OR if the former is describing a loved one then you may have low testosterone.

If you've already had it checked and your doctor said you're in “normal range.”… be aware that normal is not the same as optimal. While “normal” ranges can vary based on the lab statistics typically between 300ng/dL to 1000ng/dL, you’re considered suboptimal below 650ng/dL and at greater risk for heart disease…many providers consider suboptimal to be < 750ng/dL with symptoms present.

The key as with anything is to achieve health and natural or optimal levels of testosterone with good estrogen balance and be under the supervision of a licensed and hormone therapy trained medical provider.
